Russell Thomas
General Manager

Russell Thomas was born and raised in Ketchikan, where he started working in the resort business when he was a teenager.  He has worked in housekeeping, as a front desk clerk, dishwasher, bookkeeper, and in fish processing.

Russell served an LDS church mission in Tokyo, Japan and spent time studying business at both Brigham Young University and Utah State University before moving back to Ketchikan in 1999 to work for The Cedars Lodge.

After managing the dock at The Cedars Lodge, Russell took over as general manager in 2000.  In 2003, Alaska Sport fishing Expeditions purchased Clover Pass Resort, and Russell moved from The Cedars to take the General Manager’s position at Clover Pass.

Russell and his wife Leah have three girls and one boy.  Russell serves on the local school board and enjoys singing, playing the piano, and writing his own music.  He also holds a private pilot’s license and a general contractor’s license.

 

Chris Poynter
Operations Manager

Chris & Sarah, along with their children, joined the Alaska Sportfishing Expeditions team in January of 2009.

Chris was born and raised in Bellingham Washington. His love of fishing and hunting started early and he spent his youth hunting, fishing around the San Juan Islands and roaming the freshwater creeks looking for the perfect rainbow trout.

Chris is a fourth generation mason and operated as a masonry contractor for 12 years in Sun Valley Idaho and Central Oregon. His love for the outdoors has never waned and he spends his free time fishing and hunting both domestically and abroad. He was the Big Game Editor for an outdoor enthusiast magazine between 2004-2006.

Chris and his wife, Sarah, moved to Alaska with their 2 children in March 2008 to manage a remote fishing lodge at the base of the Alaskan Range in South-central Alaska. They spent 2 years enjoying phenomenal freshwater fishing as well as the pleasure of working side by side with each other and their children.

 

Jeremy Merrill
Dock and Marina Manager

Jeremy Merrill moved to Ketchikan as a teenager and fell in love with the ocean, the wildlife, and his wife! Family took him further north to Fairbanks, AK where he spent a number of years working for Fort Knox Gold Mine. Jeremy served an LDS church mission in Raleigh, NC before returning to Alaska.

After getting married in 2001, Jeremy returned to Ketchikan and began working for The Cedars Lodge as a summer hand; which allowed time to study during the winter months. He worked as the dock manager at The Cedars Lodge before moving into the dock and marina manager position at Clover Pass Resort in 2004.

Jeremy and his wife Jaylyn have a three year old daughter and a new son. Jeremy enjoys traveling, fishing, and deep sea diving.

 

Tonja Borer
Office Manager

Tonja is a lifelong Ketchikan resident and has been involved in the fishing/resort business since 1994. She worked at Clover Pass Resort from 1994 to 1996 and returned in 2004. She became the office manager in 2005. Tonja loves working in this industry because she gets to meet new people and has a part in making their vacation a memorable dream come true.

Tonja, her husband Joe, and daughter Dyllan enjoy fishing, spending time at their remote cabin with family and friends and being involved in Dyllan’s activities.

 

Sarah Poynter
Kitchen and Housekeeping Supervisor

Chris & Sarah, along with their children, joined the Alaska Sportfishing Expeditions team in January of 2009.

Sarah was born and raised in St. Petersburg Florida. She moved to Sun Valley Idaho where she met her husband Chris. She was fortunate to be able to work from home helping with her husband’s masonry business while raising their 2 children. With their remote and roaming lifestyle, Sarah home schools their children.

Sarah has evolved into quite an outdoorswoman and enjoys fishing, hunting and outdoor photography.
